On Tuesday, the Council unanimously approved Measure 5 to extend the Council's renewable portfolio that expires Oct. 30.
The measure, sponsored by Councillor Chris Alexander and Councillor Michael Lewis, will extend the Council's $10 million renewable portfolio for a period not to exceed 20 years.
This will end a loophole allowing renewable fuel stocks to be sold without prior consultation with the Public Trust. Currently, the council's energy supply must be renewable energy.
A special committee on residential solar installation has recommended that the Council ban such power sources altogether and also recommend to the Council that all new residential photovoltaic panels or other rooftop solar installation on the city's surface could be permitted with certain conditions (the list is not a list of all proposals submitted).
Another measure was approved to make it legal for private residential solar farms to have green roofs, as long as they have solar power that is 50% solar, 20% renewable and 10% water.
The vote was a result of a series of public meetings between the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and city staff held on Tuesday.
