The book covers the years, when the average male wore black dress shirts—white trousers, a bright suit, and black shoes from home. That's an odd look because most black women were also dressing black. Even today, only 18 percent of black women can afford top of the line wedding dresses.
"For the most part," said the publisher, "you only see black dress shirts sold in New England, in the cities in the Midwest. The book tells the story of people who were there not only from the early 15th and 16th centuries to the early 1920s, but also the early 20th century as well."
The book, written by Kate Bickner and produced by Boston based graphic designers who worked on the cover, was the last of the book's many collaborations with the publisher. Bickner and her husband will be writing new stories for it. They have started a company called "White Ladies White & Black," and the story has been featured in a couple of magazines and on websites the couple created. Since it was put to press, the book has sold over 4 million copies and amassed over 100,000 reviews.
