The Festival on the Edge of The Forest, which runs from December 5 to December 14, is a traditional event to honour the land of the tree. Many of the forest's residents still remember the trees from those who lived there first. But that can only be achieved by using traditional methods as much as a few years, says Parkes of the Sankarapai tribe, which is part of the Ojibwe family. To raise awareness, they are organising the event at a park near the city centre this summer. That park will become the site for the festival.
The KwaZulu-Natal festival started in 2010. But some say now is not the time for the festival to take on an identity as a cultural event, a traditional festival that has a lot to offer. "We are aware that there is not enough capacity of the organisers to carry out a festival on the edge of the Forest, so we are thinking about changing how we think in our festival-planning. But we need to be sure we want to draw a wider audience," says Sankarapai leader and founder Priscilla, who is one of the two main members of the Sankarapai people-to-people's group.
