RICHMOND, Mass. (WBAR) - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has just unveiled its universal line of drinking water stations, the first of its kind on the grid to run water from the Atlantic Ocean from the Massachusetts River to a community's city.

The idea originated with researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and MIT during the George Washington Air Force Academy's Advanced Research Projects Activity in 2014.

The concept has been developed in collaboration with MIT's Joint General Contracting Team (GCCC) and the Boston Redevelopment Research and Development Corporation (BRDC), Cambridge Business School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MIT.

This new version of the waterway will run from Washington to Boston's Logan International Airport and will replace the old waterway, which runs from the Capital Region to Logan International Airport. Once in use and ready for service, a new line will connect a commercial building to the existing system, according to the Harvard School of Public Health.

The new waterway will be able to deliver 12,000 gallons per minute of fresh water at a fraction of the price of the old one, to provide "the best quality of every single customer service we've seen available," according to the Harvard School of Public Health.

The Harvard School of Public Health says that Boston is one of only a few cities in the country that does not have the capital's water system.
