New-York City residents in Manhattan could soon be getting the green light to start paying transit fares, a proposed pilot project.

Last month City Council moved ahead with a draft law that would require new developments in Manhattan to collect or transmit a portion of transit-related fares to other boroughs, beginning by next September, according to David Schwartz, the director of MTA's transportation planning. (AP)

The $50-per-hour service would start by providing 20 percent of the City's subway fare to the city, Schwartz said, "that's what the subway and light rail program is for" after an agreement between Mayor Bill de Blasio and MTA chief William Bratton last month. The city would continue to collect that amount.

"We've had so many ideas throughout the years about just adding some of our local services to bring it to people and make it something they're willing to pay for," Schwartz said. "We just found a pretty simple and simple formula that would work. If we can raise the price, you can charge it, and then it can be spent on whatever we'd otherwise pay. You simply use it as revenue."

The proposed formula would help the city maintain its high-priority transit infrastructure, especially when it comes to providing a much-needed boost for its economy, Schwartz said, which is why the proposal now moves forward.
